Sophia Merit Scholarships
India (SMSI) was formed on August 27, 2006.

Scholarship Awards:
The Sophia Merit Scholarships India Awards will follow the same procedures
and guidelines that are described by Sophia Merit Scholarships, Inc
(USA). There is no separate application form or procedure for applying
for these awards. The selection of candidates and awards will be made
together by both organizations
Sponsor a Scholar
for a quarter (Rs. 6000), a semester (Rs. 12000) or a year (Rs. 25,000),
or donate any other amount that you can toward this noble cause. If
you donate the cost of a Scholar’s entire study duration (Rs.
100,000 for Engineering or 110,000 for Medical), Sophia will be pleased
to name that scholarship after some one of your choosing.

The aims and objectives
for which the society is established are:
- Award scholarships to
financially deserving, academically meritorious students
- Mobilize funds necessary
for offering the scholarships
- Find
sponsors and benefactors to award scholarships.
- Mentor the current beneficiaries
of Sophia Merit Scholarships India and Sophia Merit Scholarships Inc.
- Promote charitable and
educational activities that are conducive to the aforesaid objectives
- Provide a forum for
Sophia Scholars for furtherance of objectives
- Membership is open to
scholarship recipients from both Sophia Merit Scholarships India and
Sophia Merit Scholarships, Inc, provided they have received the scholarships
for the entire duration of their program and have graduated successfully.
- Membership is also open
to others by invitation from the Executive Committee to actively participate
and contribute towards its objectives.
- Board of Directors and
Advisory Committee Members of the Sophia Merit Schloarships Inc.,
are eligible to be members of the society
- Membership fee will
be Rs.500 per year, payable on joining and in every financial year
before April 30th. In special cases the Executive Committee can waive
this fee. First year membership fee is optional for graduating Scholars
of Sophia Merit Scholarships India and Sophia Merit Scholarships,
Inc.
- The following subscribers
to Memorandum of Association shall be founder members of the society
and would continue in office till the conclusion of Annual General
Meeting (AGM) for the financial year ending 31.03.2008.

Sophia Merit Scholarship
holds a Fundraising Dinner in Santa Clara to raise money for scholarships
in India and the eighth annual scholarships Award Function in Chennai,
India
Sophia Merit Scholarship
held a very successful fundraising event in the San Francisco Bay Area,
California on November 12. The event was held at Mayuri restaurant in
Santa Clara to raise money to give Scholarships, gift of education to
deserving needy students in India. Over hundred supporters enjoyed a
sumptuous dinner while listening to light music by the local well known
light music Pallavi group. The supporters donated to help provide education
to bright and financial needy students in India to pursue higher education
in India in the field of Engineering and Medicine.
The event was organized
by the Shyamala and Venkateswaran, Directors of the organization.
The event started with
a invocation song, followed by a power point presentation by Venkateswaran
and Muthuraman Iyer, Founder of the organization. The presentation explained
to the audience the Vision and Goal of the organization, Scholarships
awarded and Goals for the future. The presentation was followed by a
question and answer period where potential donors enquired about the
Selection and Award process. At this event the Organization raised over
$25000 in donation in cash and pledges enough to fund 10 scholarships.
Sophia Board would like
to Thank the Pallavi Group and especially Mr. Varadarajan, for taking
their time and effort for this cause and Mr. Sampath of Mayuri Restaurant
to the excellent support and dinner and finally all the supporters for
coming and donating to the cause.
